Some people have taken to Twitter to call for a boycott of retail giant Walmart after a photo of a vaccine mandate notice at a store in Quebec went viral.
The Montreal Gazette reported Quebec’s extension of the covid-19 vaccine passport to all big-box stores apart from groceries and pharmacies. The move has sparked mixed opinions.
What are Twitter users saying and what are Walmart’s vaccine rules for staff? We break everything down.
If you’ve been scrolling through Twitter lately, you’ve likely seen calls to “boycott” retail giant Walmart. Some people became angry following the news customers at Quebec big-box stores would now require a vaccine passport to enter.
As reported by the Daily Hive, any store larger than 1,500 square metres has to implement the Government of Quebec’s new vaccine passport measures. The ruling affects other companies in the province such as Canadian Tire and Costco.
Many retailers have voiced concerns about backlash from customers and the ability to find staff to scan passports amid ongoing labour shortages.
It seems Walmart was singled out for most of the online vitriol after a notice warning customers of the vaccine rule spread across Twitter:

The Quebec vaccine passport rule came into force on January 24th through the Quebec Premier Francois Legault, and requires all big-box stores to follow the regulation.
Regarding Walmart’s vaccine outlook, the company issued a press release in December 2021, stating: “We continue encouraging all US associates to do their part to protect themselves, their families and their loved ones by becoming vaccinated.”
The retail giant also confirmed in the press release it would pay $150 to any front-line associate who became fully vaccinated.
It stated: “We’re pleased more than 90% of our campus office associates have been fully vaccinated. While vaccines are not required at this time for front-line associates who work in our stores, clubs and supply chain facilities, we are paying them to roll up their sleeves.”
The official Twitter account for Walmart Canada responded to some of the boycott calls from Twitter users.
Walmart Canada assured users the vaccine passport rule was in line with the Government of Quebec, and asked for patience and understanding.
One tweet read: “Hi. As directed by the Government of Quebec, we will implement the vaccine passport at our stores in Quebec. We ask for our customers’ patience and understanding as we continue to ensure a safe and efficient customer experience.”

Despite the anger from some Twitter users, the Montreal Gazette reported the customers it interviewed mainly agreed with the measure.
“I think it’s a very good idea,” Robert Gaudry, 74, told the reporter on his way out of a Walmart superstore.
