From the table to the kitchen splashback through the worktop or the bathroom, there are many places where we find ceramics and Dekton. Often wrongly considered as similar materials, they are not totally so! A look back at the similarities and differences between these two materials which are very successful in our interiors!

DEKTON OR CERAMIC: COMMON ADVANTAGES

If these two materials are often confused, it is surely because of their common assets. Indeed, Dekton and ceramic have many identical characteristics. Here are the key points to know:

THE QUALITY IS THERE

One of the first common advantages is the quality of these materials. These two materials have several reciprocal properties that will guarantee excellent longevity over time if you know how to take care of them.

IMPECCABLE HYGIENE

You should know that these two materials are known to be very hygienic and antibacterial. This means that you will be able to cook directly on the surface of the Dekton without it leaving any smell, taste or bacteria on the food. This impeccable hygiene is an undeniable asset for all cooking enthusiasts!

GOOD SCRATCH RESISTANCE

These materials are also scratch resistant. You will no longer have to worry about damaging your beautiful table when preparing your meals unless you use ceramic knives. These are the only ones that can scratch both materials. This also applies to metal sponges. In most cases, you will therefore be able to cut your vegetables on your Dekton worktop or even ceramic worktops in the case of classic knives. But we still advise you to opt for a cutting board. As the saying goes, caution is the mother of safety!

EXCELLENT RESISTANCE TO HIGH TEMPERATURES

If Dekton and ceramics are so successful, it is also thanks to their ability to resist heat. If you put a hot saucepan on your table or on your work surface, there is little risk that it will damage your furniture. This heat resistance is mainly due to their ingenious manufacturing process. As an indication, according to its manufacturer Cosentino, Dekton can withstand up to 300 degrees. However, for greater safety, we always recommend using a trivet to place your dishes at high temperatures.

UNALTERABILITY OF COLORS

With ceramics and Dekton, no more faded colors. These two materials have excellent resistance to UV rays, which are aggressive and can dull the shine of your tray. Therefore, by opting for one of these materials, you have the assurance that your table will keep its appearance intact!

AESTHETICS, A STRIKING RESEMBLANCE

Ceramic and Dekton are also very similar aesthetically. We love their charm and authenticity with their infinite colors! Their mineral aesthetics are very popular in all modern interior decorations. Imitating the rendering of marble, concrete or other veins typical of minerals, these two materials will enhance your decor. Whether you opt for a Dekton table or, for example, a ceramic worktop… the aesthetics will be there in any case!

EASE OF MAINTENANCE AS A KEY WORD

Whether you have a Dekton or ceramic table, all you need to do is wipe it down with a lightly dampened cloth. Also add a little dishwashing liquid or neutral soap to your damp cloth or sponge. For more information, check now on homary.com.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CERAMIC AND DEKTON?

Ceramic or Dekton? It is not always easy to distinguish between these two materials. Indeed, the uninformed can confuse them. And we can’t blame them! As we have seen, their appearance is similar in many respects. However, these two materials do have significant differences. Do you want to be able to tell them apart and shine with your friends or family? So read what follows carefully.

THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS

The main difference between Dekton and ceramic is in the manufacturing process. An innovative material, Dekton is now a registered trademark of the Spanish manufacturer Cosentino. Ceramics, on the other hand, is a traditional art that has existed for many centuries.

FABRICATION DU DEKTON

Quartz, glass and porcelain are crushed and then mixed to obtain homogeneous particles. These are then colored using mixers, diluters and stirrers. Then, they are dried and transformed into aggregates. These are then decorated according to the desired effect. This decoration phase results in the formation of a continuous slab. This is divided into fragments which will be compacted using an extremely powerful press. Finally, the last step consists of heating the slabs in ovens at very high temperatures. These processes give rise to a revolutionary material that is both ultra-compact and non-porous: Dekton.

CERAMIC MANUFACTURING

Like Dekton, ceramic has several manufacturing phases. It is first kneaded and then dried. Degreasers such as quartz can be added as well as fluxes (vegetable ashes, lime carbonates, etc.). The former are intended to make the dough less elastic and the latter are used for cooking. Then comes a phase of decoration and coloring. Finally, the clay is fired at high temperatures. It is then transformed, depending on its cooking, into stoneware, pottery, earthenware or even porcelain. Each manufacturer has its own recipes, which contributes to the charm of ceramics.

THE PRICE

Even if these two high-end materials have a standing, Dekton differs slightly from ceramic. Relatively more expensive, it has some additional qualities that make it a slightly more resistant material. Thanks to its innovative creation process, it is considered a truly revolutionary material. Ceramic, on the other hand, is appreciated for its look, its practicality but also for its slightly more attractive price.

OUR OPINION: DEKTON OR CERAMIC?

Both Dekton and ceramic are top-of-the-range materials that we appreciate having at home! For their aesthetics, their resistance and their easygoing side, these two materials have become essential in many interiors. If you have the budget, we advise you to opt for Dekton. Its innovative manufacturing process gives it a resistance that is not seen anywhere else. Possessing many qualities similar to Dekton, ceramic will be an excellent alternative if you have a slightly more limited budget. We also strongly recommend it!
